| Chapter 1: Purpose
The purpose of the scholarship awards established by the Tainan High Schools Aluminum Association of North America, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as the “THSAA”) is to encourage descendants of the Taiwanese Immigrants to the United States to strive for one or more of the following;
1. Achieve academic excellence.
2. Highly develop special talents, such as arts, sports, mathematics, sciences, or other interests.
3. Accomplish outstanding public services in their respective local communities.
Chapter 2: Recipients and Amount of Awards
Each year, the THSAA Scholarship awards shall be granted to two recipients, $500 each.
The number of recipients and the amount of awards may be revised by the THSAA Board of Directors, in accordance with the requirements of the association.
Chapter 3: Review Committee
The Review Committee shall consist of at least three members, including the President of the Association and other members to be elected by and among the Directors. The President shall serve as an ex officio member and the Chairman of the Committee. Each member shall hold office for a term of one year, and may be re-elected as many terms as the Board approves. In the event of vacancy by any member, a new member elected to fill the vacancy shall be elected for the un-expired term of the member’s predecessor.
In the event that a Committee Member’s descendants are eligible to be candidates of the Scholarship awards, he or she may not serve on the Committee and shall be replaced by an alternate Director for the year concerned. The descendants of the incumbent President shall not be eligible for the awards for the concerning year.
Chapter 4: Qualification of Applicants
1. The applicant must be a blood relative, or an officially adopted family member of a Taiwanese immigrant. The applicant may be an immigrant from Taiwan.
2. The applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited high school in the United States as a Senior, a Junior, or a Sophomore.
3. The applicant is not a prior recipient of the THSAA Scholarship
Chapter 5: Application Procedure
Two months before the annual THSAA membership meeting, an announcement regarding the Scholarship award shall be published on one or more local news papers, THSAA newsletter, and the website www.tainanhighschools.com. The announcement shall include the application closing date, and the name and address of the committee member who accepts the applications. All qualified high school students may apply by submitting the following required materials.
1. An essay about the applicant himself or herself.
2. A recommendation letter from a teacher.
3. Most recent school transcripts.
4. Optionally, supporting documents or materials showing the applicant’s talent and achievements (i.e. Newspaper clipping, Award certificate, more recommendation letters, etc.)
Chapter 6: Review, Announcement and Awarding of the Scholarship
The Committee shall convene and hold the meeting each year to select the recipients, who have demonstrated the highest achievements as described in the “Chapter 1: Purpose” of this document. In this respect, the Committee may solicit opinions from outside experts with regard to each specified qualifying areas.
The scholarship recipients’ names shall be announced at the Annual General Membership Meeting of the Association. And the presentation of the scholarship awards to the recipients shall be held at the same meeting.
Chapter 7: Miscellaneous
All the rules of the Scholarship awards shall be subject to amendment, revision, or repeal by the Board of Directors.
Chapter 8: Amendment
On January 3rd, 2009, THSAA Board passed an amendment to expand the eligibility of candidates to all descendants of the Taiwanese Immigrants. This amendment became effective immediately.
